Question set mtu above 1500 on firewire connection

how do i set the mtu above 1500 of my firewire connection, i tried doing it with ifconfig, but it just says "SIOCSIFMTU: Invalid argument", and i don't have to worry about any compatibility issues because the only thing that that is connected to it is my mac which defaults to 2030 for the mtu on firewire, and i hope that if i match that i may be able to get a little more speed out of it

any help is welcome
