Server can ping clients, but clients cannot ping server and i cannot SSH into Server

Hello,

I am setting up a backup RHE Santiago 6.5 Linux machine. there are two network cards on the server. i configured 1 of the nic to be able to access all clients which are connected the switch -eth0. and the other port is direct access to the internet. -eth1

the server can communicate with all clients, and i can SSH directly from the server to clients. but non of the clients can see my server or SSH into the server.

I really need some help in understanding what is going wrong. i am new to linux, hence why i decided to trial a backup rather then the main server.

thanks for the help

A FEW things to check...

Have you FIREWALL (of any flavor) running on the server? Check for tcp port inbound allowed.
Can you ssh from the server to ITSELF? (A. on loopback B. on eth address) Is sshd running?
I have seen selinux block like this. Try turning it off. If that works, you may need to craft some SE rules.

I cannot find the command to check Firewall setting. i cannot seem to SSH from the server into itself.
what is the command to turn off SSHD?

Try

Well, first I would try the local access tests I recommended above. If you do NOT get sessions, check that sshd is actually running. If not, start it and begin your testing (from your client stations) all over again.

If you DO get ssh sessions locally, but not from the client workstations, try shutting off firewall and selinux, reboot, test (including tests I recommended above AND testing access from client workstations) again and report the conditions, tests, and results.

These tests will eliminate a few possible conditions and possible causes. Once we know these results, we will have either solved the problem, or narrowed the likely cause to a smaller list.
