Unhappy Serial port,cu, fedora core 2 issues

hey there,
I'm just starting CCNA semester 2 and i need to use the routers. i thought it would be a bit easier than it is, when i try to use 'cu' to get to a router it just says 'line in use'. i am root. i don't know whats going on and i really need to be able to connect.

I'm using fedora core 2, i don't know what cu version comes with that. i cant check now because I'm not at tafe. im a total newbie and have no idea.

anyone have a genral prod in the right direction? im not even sure what line i should be using.. some site said use 'cu -l tty0' but isnt that the virtual terminals? another said stty0 or serial0 or console. none worked. please help me, i need it bad.

im trying to get a serial cable here at home so i can try and get it working with my ADSL modem and slackwares at least. but yeah. i cant find one.

anyone? complain if you need more details

personally I use minicom... it works well.
if you're intersted in Cisco networking, you should have a look at the zebra and quagga projects.

You probably want ttyS0. I also recommend minicom.
