Serial modem: not dialing

I have serial modem on ttyS0. It worked fine with kppp at first attempt in Mandrake 9. But I switched to Debian and now it does not work. When i try to dial with kppp (same config as in Mandrake):
-it responds to modem commands and echoes them fine, only sometimes it seems a little sluggish.
-when the dial command is sent, it is echoed in the log and it is all. The dialing is not heard from the modem (or sometimes only part of the number) and nothing happens until timeout for redial attempt expires.

Weird thing: if I try to boot from Knoppix CD it dials without any problem with copy of kppp config. First I thought there is set wrong IRQ for the ttyS0, but both setserial and dmesg show the same IRQ (4) both in Debian and Knoppix. Moreover I tried to set the IRQ manually in BIOS setup to 4 (for the case that setserial does not show what's set actually) and also tried to set the IRQ manually also with setserial - no result.

Then I tried wvdial autodialer (in case something is wrong with modem initialization sequence - wvdial should be able to negotiate the right one with the modem) - the same behavior like with kppp.

So now I have two ideas what could be wrong:
- I'm quite sure the IRQ is set right, but it may conflict wit some other device (and I do not know how to check IRQ conflicts in Linux).
- The computer contains also motherboard-integrated network card, which is detected during start-up and eth0 interface is fired up (I do not use it so far). Maybe it could interfere with ppp somehow?

Note: the Debian distribution is unstable (Sid) and it was installed by migrating the live Knoppix CD on the harddisk. So it uses the same kernel as the Knoppix live-CD which works, but init scripts are probably more Debianized (I did distribution upgrade from Debian CDs).

Thanx for any ideas...
