Serial connection: connect a VT520 terminal

Hello,

I want to connect a VT520 terminal to p3 linux box.

I have two questions regarding the connection. First,
is it possible to use RJ45 instead of RS232
cable. (with DB9 pin to RJ45 and DB25 to RJ45 converter).

Second point is that; do i need null modem cable or
straight cable for the connection?

Thank you.

That connector is not really a rj45, it should be a special DEC that has the tab on the side instead of the center. It is simply a serial cable and I think it works if you break the tab and use any serial to rj45 adapter.

I think some vt have a serial input as terminal 3.

My guess would be null modem but I never label them. I pull one out of the box and try it if not grab the next. I know dumb.

I am sure you can find that someplace on the web if no one remembers here. You will know right away if it is correct usually.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. Yes, you said correctly.
I think, having seen the relevant documents,
null modem cable seems to be required in this
case. Null modem or cross cable is required
to establish a connection in between two DTE
devices and both computer and terminal are DTE device.

The special jack you mentioned should be DEC's mmj.
Apart from two mmjs, VT520 has two DB25
(one male and one female).
I'm looking for cat5 because it's cheaper.

Thanks again.
