serial communication - null modem cable
I want to know how to establish serial port communication between two linux systems using null modem cable

What type of connection. If you just want to send character from on box to another then you just plug in the cable and use minicom as a terminal emulator. If you want to run IP over the cable then you'll want to look into SLIP. Although if you are going to use IP over the cable then it'll be a damn site easier and a whole world faster just to get two old network cards and network the boxes.

I want to login to another system inorder to retrieve data from it.I am using Null modem cable(2 & 3 crossed). I tried using minicom but i didnt get login prompt.
getty is running on one system and i tried to connect using minicom from other system. but I didnt suceed in doing so

Ah, right now I follow. You need to edit /etc/inittab to run a suitable getty on the serial device so you get the login prompt. Have a look at /etc/inittab. Most of them have some example serial options that are commented out which will probably do what you want. You'll need to tell init to reread the config file after you'ved edited it. To do this you'll want to run .
