sendmail giving incoming pbm

i have configured sendmail server on my system i am having a dedicated cable connection with a permanent ip add. i am able to send mail to the outside world.... ( i dont have aregistered domain name) but am not able to recieve mail if somebdy tries to mail me at root@ipaddress. can i recieve mail s this way.....
