Sending text messages between PC's on a LAN?/

hello all,

I was just wondering is there any commnad to send a text message from my PC to any other PC in the LAN and both of them running same linux distro or may be different?
Like in windows we can send instant message from DOS prompt using the commmand "netsend".
Thanks in advance.

Maybe ntalk is what you are looking for. Be warned though, I don't know how reliable the source was, but I read that there were vulnerabilities associated with talk/ntalk, so research it before you do it.
