seeking access point/router suggestion for ranch house

I have a 2600 sq-ft ranch house with a cable-modem internet connection. Can my LQ friends suggest a good 802.11ac wifi access point and router that won't require a mortgage?

I'm trying to help family seasoned citizens who are not tech savvy. I'm hoping to find an effective product that is set-and-forget.

I'm a long time computer guy and ham radio operator so I'm willing to play all sorts of games at my house, but they are not interested in super geek/nerd solutions.

Thanks in advance,

PS/ I mentioned this in another post as a secondary issue. I'd really like an answer so I started a new thread. ~~~ 0;-Dan

Ubiquiti Edge Router Lite 3 - best router solution. They also make a LR (long range) access point.

Stick with Ubiquiti - it's commercial grade equipment at consumer grade pricing.

The router Runs Linux - you can control it thru SSH.

I've had Ubiquiti gear since 2015 - would never go back to anything else. They also have good tech support, and a strong user community forum for assistance.

... I should add that, the primary UI is web based. When I set mine up as a VPN server, I did it thru SSH.

I went to their web site. I'm impressed.
That said, the site is long on really nice looking with effective product promotion.
I did not find strong, pre-sales, technical details. Did I miss them?

Also, do you buy these direct of through some vendor? If a vendor, who?

Can anyone else comment about Ubiquiti (with an 'i') network devices?

Thanks in advance,

Check out their forums. Find and read some reviews. I just purchased the stuff off Amazon. Make sure you get it from an Amazon prime retailer for fast shipping and easy returns.

You say they run "Linux"...
Is it DD-WRT or similar or do they use something else?

Thanks in advance,

Dan....EdgeOS is a fork of Vyatta Linux developed by Ubiquiti Networks. It runs only on custom hardware based on Cavium Octeon and MIPS chips

I too run ubiquiti systems equipment in my home. Once setup, there is no need to touch it again.
It's been rock solid, trouble free. I highly recommend their equipment.

I settled on the following ASUS devices:
  • RT-AC3100 -- primary router & access point; connected to my ISP gateway
  • RT-AC86U -- additional access point; deployed as [i]AiMesh[/b] secondary device

Thanks to all who replied with helpful information,
