Searching for a firewall

I searching for a firewall for my 50MBit DSL internet connection.

I have checked the following device:

Cisco ASA 5506-X: I have read the manual this firewall and I haven`t found any information about configuring the firewall.

Can anyone recommend a secure firewall?

Just a place to start....

Use case matters here.

If this is for a business, and the risk justifies the expense, contact a SOPHOS partner and get a ASTARO SECURITY GATEWAY (ASG) device. Both more secure and easier to manage than the ASA, it has far more options. BE warned, it is not cheap and part of the expense is an annual support renewal. With that you get world class support and software updates.

If the risk, or the business case (budget), does not support the "best" answer: the ASA IS a capable device. Cisco expects you to attend training and pay for the information, but there ARE documents available. Did you check this link http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs...ick-start.html
or http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs...x-welcome.html?

While SOPHOS is winning ease-of-use and Excellence in Engineering awards, Cicso has been focused on that training income stream, and it shows. Make no mistake, both are good machines and will so the job. You might also look into Sonicwall. Somewhat less capable than either ASG or ASA, it has a simple web interface like ASG. Last I checked it was good enough for most small jobs, and was significantly less expensive. (I have not purchased or used on in over five years, so please do your research.)

What kind of hardware are you looking at? For many situations, I'd recommend just plain OpenBSD with PF. It's very simple to set up and very low maintenance.

Good point

If this is for small business or personal use,
Keruskerfuerst makes a good point. If you search for current, active firewall specific distributions on DistroWatch you get a list of about 15 that all look pretty good.

Roll your own is a definite option.
