screen dies after remote ssh launch

I'm trying to launch run.x on a remote machine, using screen to avoid a freeze of the shell upon exiting, and accessing via ssh. the following works:

local> ssh remote
remote> screen -dmL ./run.x
remote> exit

but if i now want to launch remotely, eg using a script to launch on 20 machines simultaneously, as follows:

local> ssh remote "screen -dmL /home/me/run.x"

this does not launch run.x. it's quite an annoying problem, and i'd be grateful for any hint.
cheers Olaf
