SCP with a system user

Hi all,

I would like to relocate some backup file I have for some extra safety.
I would like to copy it from one Debian machine to a SUSE machine
I would like to do it using telnet <= that was a joke, relax! I would like to do it with SCP. I thought it would make sense to create a user 'backupStuff' as a system user and so I did on both machines.
Than I tried to generate ssh keys for both machines but than - ooooppps - the user 'backupStuff' don't have a password. I than remembered that 'adduser --system' didn't ask me for one. So I can't switch to the user and create the keys.

And now my question - what am I missing here? How could this be done with a system user?

I would be very grateful for any tips or hints any of you could offer

well... I logged myself as root and gave the new user called 'openplbackup' a password. Now - when I try to log myself into that account (using putty) I simply get thrown out. That means - putty simply terminates itself. Arrrgggg.

Maybe I am too young in mind to use a system user? Maybe I should save myself the trouble and create a normal user account with a 'real' identity and a soul?

Any tips? That would be great!

Thanks, Dekers

ssh right?
do you have sshd running configured and port 22 open? There are many ssh docs available to guide you.

cheers
