scp big files stalled over VPN

Hi gurus, I have a problem where scp big file over VPN will stalled after few Megabytes are copied. I did some research and someone said it is MTU related, but I can't find a "confirmed" solution for this. Can anyone please advise?

Also, we are developing network programmings over the same network. Should I expect similar "stalled" problem for my socket operations? Or is this only specific for scp/sftp operation?

I'd be interested to see what the resolution of this is. I have no solution but have had a similar problem when copying a slackware dvd iso with scp over wireless to my wired box. The copy would stall, lost contact with the WAN and basically had to reboot router to get connectivity again. Reproducible. In the end just plugged the network in to one of the wired ports of the router.
