SBCyahoo dsl setup in Debian

I am having trouble getting my internet connection to work on my Debian system. I have the basic setup of Debian but I haven't been able to setup my dsl, SBCyahoo, to connect. I have a SpeedStream modem and my connection is ethernet. I have tried running pppoeconf but it gives me something saying that it couldn't find the interface to connect to. It does however find my eth0 so it finds my NIC. I am a beginner at using Linux and so far everything I have found hasn't worked. Please help...

Thanks

A little more info. Do you already have the home portal set up? Is there already a broadband connection to the DSL modem? If not you will have to run SBC's set up which needs a windows box because the software for set up is windows only. Once you have the home portal setup and connected to SBC then you can either let it be the IP server by DHCP, or you can assign everything statically. The home portal usually has a default address of 172.16.0.1 You can configure the portal-modem with a web browser. Then you just need to configure the linux box to connect to your LAN, or directly to the portal-modem.

You should be able to get the home portal setup by that address entered in a web browser. Or it could be 192.168.0.1

Set you Debian box to receive IP from the portal or set up everything statically.

If your DSL modem is set up with SBC then configure the Debian box's network device with the correct module or support in the kernel. If the modem allows web configuration navigate to http://192.168.0.1.

If you are having problems configuring your network card or onboard device, check the hardware compatibility lists.

Links and Lynx are text browsers.
Can you ping your Modem?
Code:
ping 192.168.0.1
What is the output of as root
Code:
ifconfig

When I pinged 192.168.0.1 it said my network is unreachable. Does that mean that I have the network configured wrong?

the output for ifconfig is

Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr ........................
                      UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST ...........

lo link encap: local loopback
This is what I get hope this helps. Thanks...

Looks like your network device is not working. Have you checked the hardware compatibility lists for it? The output of "dmesg" should have some info on it. You 'll need support in the kernel for it or load a module for it. You need a device driver to make it work.

If Debian does not have support for it then you'll have to find a linux driver for it. Look at the manufactures web site for it. You can also search here on LQ for info on your device once you know what it is. Lastly you can put another network card into the machine that is supported.
