Samba/XP authentication

When attempting to setup Samba, and after a few hours of troubleshooting, I have managed to establish a connection between the XP boxx and the Linux box running Samba.

My config file looks like this:
workgroup = HOMEGRP
netbios name = winshr
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 1000
syslog = 1
path = /home/windir
read only = no
guest ok = yes
public = yes

Now on the XP machine when I double click on the share it asks me for a userid and password, and net view also fails with unauthorized access.

Why would it ask for a user id and password, given the above set up. I'm not even sure what id and password it is looking for.
I have tryed id = guest and password = guest, but that didn't work.

Check you local file permissions. They should allow the anyone to browes the directory.

The /home/windir directory has the following settings:

I think you need to specify a guest account in your global config.
guest account = root ;)
