Samba/Windows Domain

I feel I'm nearly there with this one, but a little shove in the right direction wouldn't come amiss.

Installed Mandrake 10.1 no problem. Surfing the Internet works fine. I can see the PC on the Windows domain. So basically the networking is set up more or less correctly. It would appear that as I can "see" the Linux box on the Windows domain I've got the basics for Samba about right, though something is clearly missing.

Viewing the Linux PC in Network Neighbourhood reveals the "Samba Server 3.0.7" message in the comments field of Windows Explorer, this as defined in the smb.conf file.

However, when I click on the Mandrake PC in Network Neighbourhood (from another PC, obviously), it results in an error message - "The network path was not found". That sounds okay to me - I haven't set up any shares on the Linux box.

Problem is, despite reading lots of stuff on the Internet I'm not quite sure what the problem is. It is clearly a configuration issue I need to deal with.

What I would like to do is (a) set up a share on the Linux PC that a Windows (domain) PC can read/write, and (b) have Linux be able to "see" a share on another Windows PC which it can read/write.

What steps am I missing?

Andrew

The host name of the system must match the netbios name.

Make sure that the folders you will be sharing has correct permissions for the users to have access on it.

This is going to be short becuase this pc is going to die in 4 min. Not my fault , don't ask.

The easiest way to setup samba is to use SWAT. (samba web administration tool)
To get swat working, make sure your firewall is open on that machine for port 901 tcp,
Make sure that /etc/identd.conf (i think that is the file name) contains a entry for swat on port 901 and that it is not commented out (normally is) and that the /etc/services file's entry for port 901 to swat is uncommented. Then, all you have to do is point a web browser to that machine on port 901. Locally this is done by visiting http://127.0.0.1:901
Then set up any options you want in a very easy to understand interface.

Right, 40 secs till reboot. hope this helps. be good
