Samba-Win98 Password Basics
I've got a server running DNS, DHCP, CUPS, and Samba. OS is Debian Sarge, vanilla install no X. I've gotten it so I can print with CUPS from my Linux desktop, and am just working out the Samba. I installed Samba and SWAT, and my Windows 98 & ME clients can see the printer as \\server1\laser1. I got the drivers and everything set up, and then I click the Print Test Page button in the Windows control panel, and it prompts for a password. I don't know what to do, cause none of the passwords I try, all valid UNIX passwords on the server, don't work.
I guess I haven't configured smbpasswd, but I don't really want to. This won't be serving files, only printers. So, how do I configure Samba so that the printers require no passwords? That'd be the ideal. I don't have to supply a password when using CUPS. Sorry if this is a dumb newbie question. I just can't find the answer anywhere else.:study:  |
Maybe I wasn't clear...
...but want I want to know is how to 1) Use Samba passwords, especially in an uncontrolled network. 2) How to make Guest login or whatever it is so that a printer is username-less and password-less.
