Samba v. W2k
Please help... I've already typed this post in once then a power cut blew it away.
I have 2 PCs. W2K & RH7.1. They ping OK. I've got Samba up and running on RH7.1
The W2K box recognises the domain name I put in the smb.conf file ... like I can drill down using Windows explorer and the domain name I configured (let's call it FOO) magically appears under 'Microsoft Windows Network'.
When I click on FOO it hangs for about a minute then comes back with...
FOO is not accessible
The network path was not found
I've tried adding the W2K registry entry to inhibit password encrytption at the W2K end. I've also tried uncommenting the bit in the smb.conf file about about enabling encryption. I'm no expert but I don't think it's anything to do with passwords - like it would probably tell me if it was.
-----
OK, I really did call my domain FOO but what the hell...

What level of password security did you set in your smb.conf, there are 4 to choose from.
Share, user, server, domain
If you don't have a line security = ..... then the default is user.

Routing
Try turning on your telnet server on the RH box and see if you can get in from 2K with no problems.. If not.. check your hosts and resolv.conf

Follow what everyone else said. Also, encrypted passwords=yes
(it works fine after enabling it and windows 2000 reacts better to it)wins support = yes
Make sure the 2K box knows the samba wins address. Import Imhosts and you should be in business.Ive been working with samba and 2K in the last few weeks and it can be tricky. You must some sort of name resolution and enabling wins in samba is the easiest.

Hi
My Win98->Samba did the same, except Win hung then crashed. I found that I had windows family logon running as well as client for MS networks.
