samba trouble: not available

I'm getting a very strange error message when trying to connect to samba on my debian 2.4.18 from a w2k machine.

"The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occured:

The remote computer is not available"

I can ping it on and I have restarted samba several times. it worked fine before I upgraded my kernel and enabled internetsharing. I can't see that this is the problem. The only thing that i can think of is that windows is so stupid it won't let me connect to my gateway. any ideas about what can be wrong.

proftp and apache is working just fine. do i have to do anything with iptables or something to let me connect to samba?
