Samba trouble - directories, but no files

Hi

I am on a university network where people keep putting up and removing windows shares.. It was easy with explorer to simply type \\ip and access them.

I've just moved to linux again, installed samba, and installed the smb4k plugin for konqueror.
Now whenever I type in a smb://ip, it shows me the shared directories, but never any files. Same thing even when i access my own samba shares (set with no login/password req.)
Could someone point me in the right direction please?

sorry, a clarification.. I don't know if smb4k is the plugin for konqueror, i'm just sharing by right clicking in konqueror... but in any case, it's other people's shares giving this problem too.. can't see files, only the share directories.

SELinux?

Are you running a secure linux like Fedora 5? /etc/selinux would be the give-away. "man samba_selinux"...
