Samba trouble

I have trouble mounting the home directory on my mandrake installation. I've tried from 4 different linux installations and 1 W2k installation.

I have a laptop with the same configurations that works fine, but for some reason i can't seem to make this installation work.

i get a strange errormessage

8012: session setup failed: ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad password - name/password pair in a Tree Connect or Session Setup are invalid.)
SMB connection failed

I know 100% shure that the password is correct. Anyone know about antything else that can be wrong??

All i know is that by default Win2k encrypts passwords. B4 i figured this out all I could browse the WORKGROUP from my Window's PC's but was denied access to the Linux server. Good thing my buddy gave me an admin book. I had a tough time finding the answer online or in man pages.

I have 2 similar mandrake installations on 2 different computers. from PC1 to PC2 it works fine to mount the disk with samba and samba is set to encrypted password = yes, but the other way around it doesn't work without seting the encrypted password = no. I don't understand why.

Win2k encrypts passwords by default. I believe that Linux (or more specifically samba) does not. Therefore, if you have password encryption set to true on your server only the Win2k server should be able to connect if the other linux distros are not explicitly set to encrypt. If you set encryption to false on the server you'll have the exact opposite.

Here's a question for you, though -- Why don't you use NFS for the linux distros and SMB for the Win2k server?

i have samba installed on my laptop. it is accesible from both linux and w2k. the w2k isn't to important for me cause it is on the same computer as the samba i'm having trouble with. the rest of the computers are running linux. w2k is only for colin mcrae rally :-)

There is still a mysteri why the samba on my laptop works fine, while the samba on the other computer doesn't. they had excactly the same configuration (copied smb.conf) and they have the same distro on them. now my samba works because i changed encrypted password = no, but encrypted password is still set to yes on my laptop. w2k on my friends laptop didn't manage to connect to samba when encrypted password = yes neither was linux.
