I have problem with few of our Samba machine. Samba on those machines takes too much resources (70% of CPU). Why did it happen?
Can it be because we have a tons of files under Samba shares? What else can affect CPU usage for Samba?
We use Samba a lot, but sometimes Samba takes till 90% of CPU and all other process just freezen. Can somebody help with this issue?
I have very little experience w/ Samba myself, so I can't answer
your question, but one thing I think is likely a major factor to
consider is the version(s) of Samba on you machines.
Yes samba does take a lot of resources when your constantly copying files around that are huge and doing stuff with lots of disk activity. I have used both 2.2 and 3.0 .
I have found however basic everyday file serving of smaller files is not that bad along with authentication tasks. If i had a better machine with scsi disk's and a caching controller I would proabbly get better performance; Instead of the 4 IDE drivers and the ATA66 controller on my motherboard.
But in all fairness I also run : Bind, DHCPD, Apache, Squid, IPTABLES, Cacti, MYSQL and Coldfusion on my server and i find that Samba doesn't bog the server all that much it still continues to humm along. I've even been able to watch movies from one machine while copying files onto another disk in the machine without an issue.
My system specs:
-DUAL Celeron 466
-ABIT BP6 MB
-640MB of RAM
-Nvidia Geforce2 16meg card
-3 X 80gig Seagate 7200rpm drives - storage
-1 X 60gig MAxtor 5400rpm drive -storage(/home folders) and backup disk for website
-1X 13gig Maxtor 7200rpm drive -- OS drive
