Samba...so close but not quite !

Hi,
I'm pretty new to this. I have Kubuntu running and I can see my Windows PC in Samba Shares. I can actually click on my workgroup (Home) and see the shared drives and folders on the XP PC.

When I get to the file level, I see the files on the remote windows drive. BUT when I click on them, Open Office loads but....then nothing. Nothing at all. I can't actually pull up the file (.doc, .xls).

Sometimes, rarely, I get a window prompting me to enter the accessibility info. I enter the user name and pwd for the admin of the remote machine. But it will just keep asking me, like it is not accepting it.

I'd really appreciate any advice. I feel like I am so close !
Am I supposed to do anything on the remote windows machine (XP)?
Thanks !

Here is my smb.conf:

[global]
workgroup = HOME
server string = Samba %v Server

; change address if your home network does not use 192.168.1.xxx
interfaces = lo eth0 192.168.1.0/24
hosts allow = 127. 192.168.1.

log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
max log size = 50

security = user
encrypt passwords = yes
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192

username map = /etc/samba/smbusers

Hi cleanriver, Welcome to lq. Check the permissions on the shares from the windows side.
Good luck. ;-)

Did you run the "smbpasswd" program to add the windows user and password? This should be the user/password of the user who owns that share. I don't believe the the actual "Administrator" user is accessible (except in safe mode). You might have a regular user with administrator rights however.

I'm basing this on XP Home.

still trying...

Thanks for the welcome.

The shares are set up for "everyone".

I ran the smbpwd command. I am using the same pwd throughout.

I just tried the same with my Vista laptop, and I am having the same problem. It accepts my authentication just fine, but when I click on the actual file, the Open Office screen comes up, the blue progress bar moves quickly across the screen...then nothing.

So, we know the problem is not specific to the PC machine. And, I am 100% certain I have the authentication info right.

NEW INFO ! Hey, I just discovered that jpg and txt files that on the remote PCs open just fine on my kubunto machine. The jpg uses Gwenview and the txt uses Kate.

Soooo, does that indicate that this is a problem w/Open Office, and not Samba ?

Which forum would you recommend for this issue now ?

Many thanks, new Linux friends.

If it's working locally try mounting the share then opening the file.
Good luck. ;-)

Edit: Just in case your next ? is how do I mount the share here is some useful info for mounting smb shares.

I wonder if it might be a file locking problem.

That is an area that Samba can improve on, and it doesn't help things much when MS publishes phony documentation on some of these particulars (like acls).

jschiwal, That's a very real possibility but, I'm betting the files open once the share is mounted.
Good luck. ;-)
