Samba Server with Win XP

Hi, I am a Linux newbie and I am trying to set up a Samba server on a Linux machine running Suse 9.2. The network will consist of some Win XP machines and the Samba server.

At the moment I am just trying to get one of the Win XP machines connected to the Samba server. I have problems setting the Samba server so that the win machines can access it. If I go to Microsoft Windows Network, I can see the work group I have set up ("AGROUP"). When I try to access it, a message pops up saying I don't have access or the network connection is not there. I have also tried joining the group by setting it in System Properties of XP. Same problem. If I do that, I can see the XP computer in the workgroup if I look at it in the XP machine. But if I look at the group from the Samba server, I only see the Samba server and not the XP machine.
I can ping the samba server from XP and vice versa.
Is it something to do with my global setting in smb.conf?

# Global parameters
[global]
workgroup = AGROUP
security = DOMAIN
map to guest = Bad User
username map = /etc/samba/smbusers
log level = 3
server signing = auto
max smbd processes = 9
hostname lookups = Yes
printcap cache time = 750
add machine script = /usr/sbin/useradd -c Machine -d /dev/null -g samba-clients -s /bin/false %m$
logon path = \\%L\profiles\.msprofile
logon drive = P:
logon home = \\%L\%U\.9xprofile
os level = 65
preferred master = Yes
domain master = Yes
wins support = Yes
nbdd support = Yes
ldap idmap suffix = ou=Idmap
ldap machine suffix = ou=Computers
ldap suffix = dc=example,dc=com
ldap ssl = no
printer admin = @ntadmin, root, administrator
guest ok = Yes
cups options = raw

This problem could also be related, if I do: smbclient -L linux1
linux1 is the server name.
I can see all my share folders except for the printer I have connected.

path = /var/spool/samba
create mask = 0600

Hmm - lots of unfamiliar stuff in your smb.conf (I do exactly what you want to do - network my XP PC's with my Rh9 machine). Here's my smb.conf - why don't you try it instead of yours, and see if it helps?

[global]

netbios name = stefan
workgroup = GOEDEHOOP10
security = share
log file = /var/log/samba.log
log level = 1
socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY SO_RCVBUF=16384 SO_SNDBUF=16384
wins support = yes
domain logons = no
logon drive = f:
logon home = \\stefan\%U
os level = 99
preferred master = yes
local master = yes
hosts allow = 196.254.255.10 196.254.255.11 196.254.255.20 196.254.255.30 127.0.0.1 196.254.255.40 196.254.255.50 196.254.255.60
encrypt passwords = yes
browseable = yes
lanman auth = yes
lm announce = yes

[shared]
path = /mnt/win/shared
guest ok = yes
writeable = yes
create mode = 0666
directory mode = 0777
browseable = yes
public = yes

With the XP machines not using any form of domain but all in the same IP address range (as detailed in the hosts allow line) and all set to be members of the workgroup GOEDEHOOP10.

Hope this helps? I can then easily access the "shared" share on my Linux machine from any XP machine on the network.

Regards

This site helped me do what I think you're trying to do.

I have my main desktop computer hooked up to my wireless router (have 2 laptops, and a third desktop on wireless), and wanted to share my printer among them all. A bit overkill, sure, but now I have full file sharing and everything. It worked like a charm.

This walkthrough sets up your linux box as a primary domain controller (WinNT-style), so that you can log on to it, access files on it, print, whatever. Not sure if you want all this functionality; I didn't, but I often find it quite handy.

If nothing else, it should get you familiar enough with SWAT that you would be able to figure out how to fine-tune what you want.
