You have to put the startup script for the samba in the appropriate run level directory.

Say you run your server in init 3 so you can put your file in /etc/rc3.d directory with a Sxxsmbd where xx = a two digit no. which will tell init to load the samba prog at startup.

In redhat a simpler way would be to use the "chkconfig" command to do it.

#chkconfig --level3 smbd on

You may use the /etc/rc5 directory if you want the samba deamon to start in run level 5.
