samba questions?

ok for starters i have debian etch 4.0 installed. i did apt-get install samba samba-common it said it was already up todate and nothing new to install/upgrade. so i configured the smb.conf
this is the file i configured

"# Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
#
#
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
# are not shown in this example
#
# Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
# is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
# for commentary and a ; for parts of the config file that you
# may wish to enable
#
# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command
# "testparm" to check that you have not made any basic syntactic
# errors.
#

# WINS Server - Tells the NMBD components of Samba to be a WINS Client

# If we receive WINS server info from DHCP, override the options above.
include = /etc/samba/dhcp.conf

# This will prevent nmbd to search for NetBIOS names through DNS.

# interface names are normally preferred
interfaces = 192.168.1.39/8 eth1 192.168.1.40/8 eth2

# Only bind to the named interfaces and/or networks; you must use the

# It is recommended that you enable this feature if your Samba machine is

now first question is did i configure this file correctly? if not what should i change?

now that i change that file i figured id install a samba gui so i downloaded gnomba-0.6.2 since im running gnome and then this is what i got when i did ./configure in the directory

"stydendea64:/home/stycaptain/gnomba-0.6.2# ./configure
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for working aclocal... found
checking for working autoconf... found
checking for working automake... found
checking for working autoheader... found
checking for working makeinfo... found
checking whether to enable maintainer-specific portions of Makefiles... no
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details."

so i figured i might not have a gcc compiler so i apt-get install gcc it downloaded and installed the latest gcc compiler so i went did the ./configure again and it said the same thing. i then went into the readme it said if ./configure make make install didnt work
to use autogen.sh so i did ./autogen.sh it said i needed to install autoconf and automake-1.3 so i downloaded autoconf and auto make-1.3 installed with out and problems so i went again into the directory and did the command ./autogen this time it went through its processing and again at the end it said

"checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details." "

so second question is what is the importance of the samba gui gnomba? what benifits would i have haveing it? do i need it? and is there a solution to this problem?

all i want samba for is share certain drives with certain users. right now i can see all my computers but it wont let me share drives and when i use my windows machine to acess the differnt computers it says i need a user and pass when i didnt setup a user and pass so any help would be usefull if you need any more info plz let me know thanks for ur help.

Change the workgroup value to something other than "workgroup". Try changing it to "MSHOME", and make sure all of your Windows boxes are part of the "MSHOME" workgroup (mine's "HOMELAN" and all of my non-Linux boxes are a part of that workgroup).

Also, are you trying to set this up with Windows XP boxes (or any Windows version < XP)? The reason I ask is because they way my Samba version is set up, any Windows version <= XP can see my Samba shares - whereas my friend's Vista laptop, cannot. From what I've been reading Vista's a nightmare to network with (unless you have a MacBook or another Vista box - even networking from XP to Vista is a disaster).

When you're setting up Samba, it's best to create a user that's only used for logging in to your Samba shares.

I'm sorry - I would provide step-by-step instructions, but I'm on my way out the door. A quick Google search will give you what you need.

well now i cant even see any of the computers so i dunno. but if i change the workgroup = workgroup to say workgroup = mshome and on all computers set them to mshome i will see them on mshome but how do i go and get acess to say share hdd 1 or hdd2 and make it so only certain users can write on it from a different computer on the network and how do i make it so that when i acess it from my windows machine it will just open and not ask for a pass and user

When you say you "cant even see any of the computers", what do you mean? Which computer are you referencing this from - the Samba server?

The thing with the workgroups is that all the workgroup names MUST match if you want to see all of the Samba shares.

Thirdly, I can only assume when you say "share hdd 1 or hdd2", you mean the directories that those partitions are mounted to. Here is a simple share definition:
Code:
[share-name]
     permissions...
     ...
     ...
     ...

# An example from my /etc/samba/smb.conf #

[music]
     comment = Music, music, music
     path = /media/6/music.shared
     guest ok = Yes
     read only = No
If you want to allow users on the Windows machines to just be able to open up the networked dirs and not have to worry about usernames and passwords, in the GLOBALS section of smb.conf, set the security variable to have a value of "SHARE" and set auth methods to "guest".

NOTE: Anything in this post in the code block, or bolded or in quotes, is case-sensitive. Don't think xx = XX = Xx = xX.
