Question Samba Question.

Hello all,

I have just added another pc with rh8 on it. I have a rh8 server alread setup for samba import and exports. What i would like to do is to setup the new rh8 machine(a workstation) to import the directory from the win2000 file server.

Then I though is it possible to just configure the 1 newly add rh box to access the imported win2000 directory on the already setup and running samba server? I have NFS already setup between the two machines. I have experiment and tried to access the directory where the samba mount point is but all i got was an empty directory, but when i check the RH8 server directly it was accessable. Any ideas? or should i just setup a samba server on the workstation and import it directly? I would rather try to get it from the main RH8 server to avoid complications.

Thanks,
Greg

Please clarify. I don't understand what you want to achieve.

What do you mean by samba import and exports?

I have a RH8 server already setup that uses Samba to export home directories to my wins workstations and it is also setup to import, a directory from a win2000 fileserver.

I have recently add a new RH8 workstation for a user. He needs access to that win2000 fileserver. I was wondering if it would me possible to just setup smb services on the workstation and to just import his samba directory off of the RH8 server instead of going directly to the win2000 server. Note, I have setup nfs so he has access to his home directory on the RH8 server as will.

I hope this was a better explanation.

Thanks,
Greg

Okay...

I am not aware of the import or export of data using Samba.

I know that you can set up Samba on Linux so that the user of the Linux machine can access the share (directory) on the Windows machine.

You can also set it up so that the users of the Windows machine have access to the share on the Linux machine.

Access to Windows from Linux is done by the mount command.

It sounds as if you have successfully mounted the Windows share on the Linux box. You should be able to use the same approach to mount the Windows share on the new Linux machine.

I hope this helps.

Try (as root):
cd /
mkdir \windowdrive
smbmount '\\windowbox\sharedfolder' \windwodrive -o username=username[/domain],password=windowpassword

cution: no space between option statments (i.e. around the comma)
