Samba problems.

Hello,
My network consists of a win2k box (known as DELL with the ip: 192.168.0.1) and my slackware machine (known as ??? with the ip: 192.168.0.2). When browsing network neighborhood from the win2k machine I get this error: "Home is not accessible. The account is not authorized to log in from this station".
Also, when trying to list the shares on DELL, I get this error:

Quote:
root@localhost:/home/stuart# smbclient -L DELL
added interface ip=192.168.0.2 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
timeout connecting to 143.166.83.21:139
Error connecting to 143.166.83.21 (Operation already in progress)
Connection to DELL failed
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi C++-freak

(ok, does your name imply that you are good at C++? Can I ask you questions?)

Look at the IP --

timeout connecting to 143.166.83.21:139
Error connecting to 143.166.83.21 (Operation already in progress)
Connection to DELL failed

so for some reason, your slackware box thinks that this DELL is somewhere else out on the internet (actually, 143.166.83.21 is "vandom.us.dell.com" -- your "DELL" gets resolved to that).

Try smbclient -L 192.168.0.1
and see what you get.

And see if you have some weird stuff in resolv.conf and your hosts file... see how it comes that your dell gets resolved as it is.

Hope it helps,
mlp

Hi mlp86
My name actually implies something about the freakish-looking (and subsequently buggy) code that results in me attempting to write in C++. Sorry to disapoint.
Aye, I tried that (with a few extra params passed), seems to work.

Quote:
root@localhost:/home/stuart# smbclient -L 192.168.0.1 -U Administrator
added interface ip=192.168.0.2 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
session request to 192.168.0.1 failed (Called name not present)
session request to 192 failed (Called name not present)

The "Called name not present" stuff confuses me.. Okay, I am looking at my resolv.conf and I have:
Quote:
search net
nameserver 198.164.30.2
nameserver2 198.164.4.2
That looks normal to me. So on to my hosts file... I'm not sure I understand this file, it seems it has been a long time since I set this machine up.
Quote:
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.2 localhost.net localhost
I am going to recap. smbclient is able to see the shares available on DELL. my slack box thinks that DELL is way out on the internet (did it resolve through my ISPs DNS server?)

Thanks

Yeah...

"DELL", with your "search net" directive in resolv.conf, becomes "DELL.net" and gets looked up. And guess what --

# nslookup -sil dell.net
Server: 167.206.3.168
Address: 167.206.3.168#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: dell.net
Address: 143.166.83.21

So that's it. Add

192.168.0.1 DELL

to your hosts file and you'll be fine, assuming that the lookup order is file first, then DNS.
