samba problems

Hi, I'm having trouble connecting to an XP machine on my home network, I have just set up Samba and used the command
# smbclient -L 192.168.0.177

(where 192.168.0.177 is the XP machine)

to try to connect to it? but all i get as output is:

[root@localhost root]# smbclient -L 192.168.0.177
added interface ip=192.168.0.102 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
timeout connecting to 192.168.0.177:139
Error connecting to 192.168.0.177 (Operation already in progress)
Connection to 192.168.0.177 failed

also, i have got the following on a seperate command, where I'm just kind of guessing what to do:

[root@localhost root]# smbclient //PERCY/Shareddocs
added interface ip=192.168.0.102 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Got a positive name query response from 192.168.0.177 ( 192.168.0.177 )
timeout connecting to 192.168.0.177:139
Error connecting to 192.168.0.177 (Operation already in progress)
Connection to PERCY failed

so whats going on all you experts? I'm a total n00b and don't know what to do. I'm not even sure whether the XP machine needs to be a server on the LAN or something? My network setup is a DSL box through to a router, with 1 RH8 box (this one) and one XP box running off of it. The XP box can see the samba server running on this PC but I get nothing in the reverse dierection.

Help me.

Thanks

J

Is there a firewall running on the XP box? If yes, try turning it off and retest.

when you do
# smbclient -L 192.168.0.177
try
# smbclient -L 192.168.0.177 -U username
replace username by a user that you have in passwd and smbpasswd

btw, just in case, I hope you did put you users in the /etc/samba/smbpasswd

Regarding XP firewalls, if you are using XP pro, look at the LAN connection properties (under Network Connections) and be sure that the “Protect my computer...” box is NOT checked under the Advanced tab. Dollar Bill has been shipping XP pro with the box prechecked.

Other firewall options would be software like ZoneAlarm and Norton Personal Firewall/Internet Security.
