Samba printing help!!
I'm having trouble printing from a Windows box (both ME and 98SE) to a printer attached to my Mandrake Linux box. When I turn on Samba logging, I get the following messages:
[2002/10/03 17:45:05, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection(640)
dell-steve (192.168.1.102) connect to service hpprinter as user nobody (uid=99
, gid=99) (pid 5434)
[2002/10/03 17:45:05, 2] lib/access.c:check_access(329)
Allowed connection from (192.168.1.102)
[2002/10/03 17:45:05, 2] smbd/password.c:pass_check_smb(575)
pass_check_smb failed - invalid password for user [steve]
[2002/10/03 17:45:07, 2] lib/access.c:check_access(329)
Allowed connection from (192.168.1.102)
[2002/10/03 17:45:07, 2] smbd/password.c:pass_check_smb(575)
pass_check_smb failed - invalid password for user [steve]
I've got security = SHARE, guest user is set to nobody, and guest ok for the printer is set to yes. I'm logged in to the Windows box as user "steve", but why is it trying to look up steve's password, when it's connecting to hpprinter as user nobody?
Users "steve" and "nobody" are both defined in passwd and smbpasswd. I've tried various passwords (the Windows steve's password and the Linux steve's password) for "steve" in smbpasswd, with no effect.
Here's my smb.conf:
# Samba config file created using SWAT
# from localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1)
# Date: 2002/10/03 17:21:46
# Global parameters
[global]
netbios name = DELL
security = SHARE
encrypt passwords = Yes
log level = 2
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 50
message command = /usr/bin/linpopup "%f" "%m" %s; rm %s &
hosts allow = 192.168.1. 127.
[hpprinter]
path = /var/spool/samba
guest ok = Yes
printable = Yes
[C]
comment = Dell C drive
path = /mnt/win_c
guest ok = Yes
I have no problems connecting with the "C" share.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I figured it out
Sorry to bother you all. Problem solved. I needed to make a couple of changes: set "guest only = yes" in the [printers] section of smb.conf, and define a separate printer in CUPS, defined as a raw printer (and set up the Windows printer to use that new share). Then everything worked.
By the way, this problem started when I upgraded from Mandrake 8.1 to 9.0. Mandrake 8.1 had Samba 2.2.1a, and Mandrake 9.0 has Samba 2.2.6pre2. I didn't change a thing in smb.conf, and suddenly the printer didn't work anymore after the upgrade. But that's ok; it works, and I can feel good about overcoming another Linux hurdle and learning something in the process.
