I want to print a document on my comp using a printer on a remote win machine in which i have a login and a password,,,,,,the printer is shared by that machine..
how do i print the document..
plz tell me both the gui method and the command line method
normally the driver for the printer is automatically downloaded from the computer with the printer and you can print but when you're trying to print from a linux box it could not be possible. When you do it the other way around. With the printer on the linux box you can print from windows using the Adobe Postscript Printer Driver but i don't know this is possible the other way around. Maybe if there is a postscript printer server for windows (something like cups)
hi tingku... i am also experiencing the same problem as yours... when i used the printer config in the control center, i click on the 'scan' button. samba can detect my network.. but when i tried to click on the relevent win pc for which my printer is attached, it came out a dialog saying that 'NT access denied'.
You can easily add a remote Windows printer to your linux box using CUPS provided there is a linux printer driver for the printer. You have to use the CUPS Web manager to do it and you have to have a printer administrator to do it. I set up a linux user to do this using lppasswd -a <linuxuser> in a shell as root.
You also need to share the windows printer on the windows box and in my case because I have domains I have to attach to the printer as a valid user.
Once the basics are there launch the CUPS Web manager localhost:631 , click Manage printers .. Add a printer (it will ask for the name and password you set up with lppasswd).
Give it a name and description - there are a few restrictions on what it'll accept and then hit the Continue button and select Windows printer via Samba from the drop down.
Enter smb://win_user:win_passwd@win_machine/print_share_name (it's the only format that I found to work successfully for me) and then choose the make and model of the printer from the next two drop downs. That should be it - try a test print.
Once added then the printer should be available from all your applications on the linux box.
