samba PDC <-> BDC

Hello!

I have a Samba pdc working fine but i plan to config a bdc which can take over the service if heartbeat tells him to.

As

http://samba.irc.gr/samba/ftp/docs/h...BDC-HOWTO.html

says it is possible to copy a few files (groups / passwd / smbpasswd and so on) but it doesn` t work.

I even do not have the option to:

"...running smbpasswd -S as the root user, the domain SID will be retrieved from a domain controller matching the value of the workgroup parameter in smb.conf and stored as the new Samba server's machine SID. See the smbpasswd(8) man page for more details on this functionality. "

as there is no "-S" in smbpasswd.

Does anybody have some experience ?

I was in a similar situation, but a quick look at the sambe documentation:

http://au.samba.org/samba/docs/man/S...html#id2520259

explains what to do:

The domain SID has to be the same on the PDC and the BDC. In Samba versions pre-2.2.5, the domain SID was stored in the file private/MACHINE.SID. The domain SID is now stored in the file private/secrets.tdb. This file is unique to each server and can not be copied from a PDC to a BDC, the BDC will generate a new SID at start-up. It will over-write the PDC domain SID with the newly created BDC SID. There is a procedure that will allow the BDC to aquire the Domain SID. This is described here.

To retrieve the domain SID from the PDC or an existing BDC and store it in the secrets.tdb, execute:

root# net rpc getsid

So on the BDC, issue the net rpc getsid command.

You guys need to take a look at Samba By Example, book by John Terpstra, which goes into this in detail.

2.2.5 is pretty darned oudated - probably EOL by now, or close to it.
