Samba not working

I am new to Linux and have installed Cinnamon 18.3 as the only OS on a laptop.
I have added Samba and System-config-samba but when I launch Samba and enter the password and OK I get nothing.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions Brian. A little more definitive information would be useful. Is this a samba server we're referring to here?

...or perhaps you are only trying to access/browse samba shares on your LAN?

I have done that but when I click on Samba and enter my password and OK the page disappears and I don't get the Samba application.

All I want to do is have access to my Windows 10 PC files over the home network and for the Windows 10 PC to have access to the Linux Cinnamon laptop files.
Perhaps there is another way?

There are two parts to samba i.e the server and client which are independent of each other. The server allows others to access its files, it isn't a user application but works in the background. System-config-samba is a graphical interface for creating/modifying samba shares and users.

The client part is the utility/application that access shares from a Windows computer (or other computers running samba). Most file browsers have a samba client built in and works similar to Windows where you can click to browse the network. Make sure the Mint firewall if running allows samba traffic.

To access your windows machine, you should mount it in Linux using cifs.

To access your linux machine, you need to setup and activate Samba shares on the linux machine, configuring the smb.conf file in the process.
