Samba Networking With XP
 

I've recently installed FC3 on one of my machines and got it up and running in most aspects. I have been battling with samba though trying to share with one of my XP machines on my network. In my network there are two XP Machines and my new Linux Machine. The XP Machine that shares a printer (named OFFICE), I can see and access, as well as use the shared printer from the linux machine, but I can't see the linux machine from that particular XP box. The other XP machine on my network(Named LAPTOP), I can't seem to see from the linux box or vice-versa.

I'm not sure if I've gone too far at this point, I have been able to see the LAPTOP from the linux box, but after a reboot, it was gone.

I have SMB checked in my services and it is running.

As for Hosts, I'm not exactly sure how this works. In the Network Config on the linux machine, I have both of my XP machines listed with their IP's.

I read something about editing the lmhosts.sam file on my XP machines, but I'm not sure this is going to change anything as I can see one machine but not the other and I haven't changed that file.

I'm not sure where to start to troubleshoot this, Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

EDIT: I can see the linux box from LAPTOP now, but I am still denied access to it, and cannot see it from the linux machine

I had exactly the same problem - also had two XP machines, only one of them seeing the Samba'ed Linux machine. Both machines were essentially identical (just like yours, it seems). The only solution eventually was to enter a direct network path in the Add Network Places dialog on the XP machine that was NOT seeing the linux machine, using the network path displayed on the other XP machine when it is connect to the Linux machine (conveniently, both my XP machines are right next to each other, so it was as simple as sitting in front of the one that was not "seeing" the Linux machine, and typing the direct network address off the screen of the other machine that WAS seeing the Linux machine).

Maybe you can try this?

I'm not sure I know exactly what you are talking about here... In the add a network place dialog box it asks for the network address... After entering the IP for the linux machine it says it isn't valid...

Could it be a firewall issue with linux? I have the firewall on my router and my XP machines off.....
