Samba in a linux network

I'm trying to set up samba for a linux network (no windows pc are involved as of yet but may be in the future). However, I have a strange problem. I do the following:

##### PC2 ####
smbclient -L aragorn

Domain=[TUX-NET] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.7-5-SUSE]

Sharename Type Comment
--------- ---- -------
groups Disk All groups
deskjet930c Printer HEWLETT-PACKARD DESKJET 930C
print$ Disk Printer Drivers
IPC$ IPC IPC Service (Samba 3.0.7-5-SUSE)
ADMIN$ IPC IPC Service (Samba 3.0.7-5-SUSE)
Domain=[TUX-NET] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.7-5-SUSE]

Server Comment
--------- -------
ARAGORN Samba 3.0.7-5-SUSE
LEGOLAS Samba 3.0.9-2.3-SUSE

Workgroup Master
--------- -------
TUX-NET ARAGORN

##### PC1 ####
smbclient -L legolas

Error connecting to 127.0.0.2 (Connection refused)
Connection to legolas failed

Why is the connections refused?

One thing I have noticed. On the pc were I get a response (aragorn) I see that both the "nmbd" and "smbd" daemons are running, but on the other (legolas) only the "nmbd" daemon is running. For some reason I can't start "smbd" on legolas.

Any help would be appreciated!

smbd is the process required to make Samba connections. You may want to try "tail /var/log/messages" to see why smbd is failing to start. It's probably a mis-configuration.

I'm not sure why you are wanting to use SAMBA given the fact that you don't even have any window$ machines in your network but you must have a good reason. However, have you looked into NFS? It's a whole lot easier and linux friendly... I'm having a heck of a time with samba myself right now but my NFS shares are working like a champ...

aznluvsmc: when I tried starting "smbd" here's what I see in /var/log/messages.

Sep 6 08:03:06 legolas smbd[5319]: [2005/09/06 08:03:06, 0] lib/util_sock.cpen_socket_in(708)
Sep 6 08:03:06 legolas smbd[5319]: bind failed on port 139 socket_addr = 0.0.0.0.
Sep 6 08:03:06 legolas smbd[5319]: Error = Address already in use

Ok, so this doesn't look good. What address is it reffering to?

alfNtexas: the only reason i'm using samba is that I might have a windows pc to deal with in the future (work laptop), but you're right, other than that I don't have a real reason. I haven't actually looked into NFS, but I'm willing to give it a try. Any tips/hints on NFS?

Thanks.

I think I see the problem.

I'm using VMWare to run Win2000 and it uses samba to share files between the host (linux) and guest (Win2000) OSs. So now the question becomes can I have two different deamons running at the same time?
