Post Samba doing my head in - cannot join domain

Here is the values I have changed in my smb.conf:

Code:
[global]

# 1. Server Naming Options:
# workgroup = NT-Domain-Name or Workgroup-Name
   workgroup = rlbuht.lan

# Security mode. Most people will want user level security. See
# security_level.txt for details.
   security = domain

# Use password server option only with security = server or security = domain
# When using security = domain, you should use password server = *
; password server = <NT-Server-Name>
    password server = *

# You may wish to use password encryption. Please read
# ENCRYPTION.txt, Win95.txt and WinNT.txt in the Samba documentation.
# Do not enable this option unless you have read those documents
# Encrypted passwords are required for any use of samba in a Windows NT domain
# The smbpasswd file is only required by a server doing authentication, thus
# members of a domain do not need one.
  encrypt passwords = yes
  smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
These are the only values I have changed, everything else has the default values. So after I had edited the .conf file I issued this from the CLI:

Code:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb stop
to stop all the smb and nmb services. Next I done the following:

Code:
smbpasswd -j rlbuht.lan -r rlhdc01

>> See 'net join' for this functionality
So:

Code:
net join

danny password:

Unable to find a suitable server

Unable to find a suitable server
Then I thought it might be becasue the smb has been stopped so:

[CODE]
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start
Starting SMB services: [ OK ]
Starting NMB services: [ OK ]

[root@localhost /]# net join

danny password:

Unable to find a suitable server

Unable to find a suitable server
[/CODE[

Any Samba gurus see anything obviously wrong? Cheers for any replies.

My notes are at work and I am at home today, but shooting from the hip:

1] Make sure that rlbukt.lan is a real domain name on your PDC.

2] Change the password server = * line to specify the name or address of you PDC.

For example: password server = 10.10.19.20

Hope this helps.

It's okay - it was just a typo in one of my lines

Now hoever raises my next question, when I use net join I get the following:

Code:
[2004/05/26 17:10:59, 0] libads/kerberos.c:ads_kinit_password(133)
kerberos_kinit_password dannyadmin@RLBUHT.LAN failed: Cannot find KDC for requested realm
Joined domain RLBUHT.
Firstly what does all that mean. Secondly, how can I get it so at the login box it just asks you for your NT user account and not your local Mandrake one?

Again - any help greatly appreciated

Two things:

First,
Quote:
# 1. Server Naming Options:
# workgroup = NT-Domain-Name or Workgroup-Name
workgroup = rlbuht.lan
I don't know that you can have a " . " in your workgroup name.

Second,

Quote:
net join

danny password:

Unable to find a suitable server
I think that you should do net join -w YOURPDCSERVERNAME -U danny

This assumes, of course, that danny has permissions to add a server to the domain.

I hope this helps.

I have a feeling the easiest way to deal with this would be redhat-config-samba..... www.rpmfind.net But, that's if you're using redhat which I cant tell if you are. And that's also if you want to give up on the "challenge" and just get it working. I'm using a Win2k server to authenticate all the users using my SMB shares and I used redhat-config-samba.

Might help.

Thanks for the replies.

I can join the domain perfectly and get access to resources, but I am just wondering what that error message means - I've had some feedback saying that it's to do with the encryption but I though Linux supported Kerberos?

I am using Mandrake 10 for info. And are there any advances on the login box?

For example, I have to log onto the Mandrake local machine and then bind to the domain - how can I get it so I just log onto the domain from the normal mandrake users screen?
