samba connection history

I am using Samba-3.0.1 on my Debian system. I know about smbstatus, which displays all current sessions of people connected to my computer, but how can I find out who has been on my computer in the past? I know about the log files in /var/log/samba/log.* but that doesn't tell me everything about all sessions that have ever occurred (such as what files they download and what shares they enumerate). Is there a better way to find this out?

Detailed info on transfers would probably require some sort of proxy server.

Turn up the debug level. 2 should be fine for what you want. Make the log file a fairly large size. You should also append or prefix the log file name with the %m parameter so that each machine gets its own log file as opposed to having a really huge one for a whole bunch of machines.
