Samba config etc/usr which and....

I tried getting my windows 98/xp to explore the linux computer but keep getting the screen to enter a IPC$ password. I wanted to add the "encrypt password=yes" and #... commands to smb.conf but found smb.conf in the etc/ and the usr/ directories. Which one?
I tried the etc/..../smb.conf but it would let me save it (read / write)only as a save as file...
How do I make a file writable instead of read only?

files in /etc are usually only writable by root. you could change permissions to allow a user to write to smb.conf but this is not good practise.

either edit the file as root (execute su root from a console and run your preferred editor) or use sudo if this is properly set up.
