Samba client seems to be under performing, why? See my test results. . . .

Hello all,

I've got a wired 100Mb home network, with a linux file server and different OS clients here and there. I'm trying to figure out why my network performance is so poor. Not being a network guy, I did a bunch of testing to try and shine some light on the problem, the results of which are summarized below. These results were acquired through repeated large test downloads altering which computer was performing which role, and with two different linux distros. Based on my tests the problem seems to be with the samba client software. Has anyone experienced this before? Can anyone give me any advice on what to try next?

In addition, I've found that multiple parallel downloads in the samba-cli to samba daemon configuration (which is the way I primarily run things) will increase utilization to about the same as the other configurations. What's up with that?

Thanks.

Code:
Client Server Network Utilization

samba-cli on linux	samba daemon on linux	10%
windows XP samba daemon on linux	60%
samba-cli on linux	windows XP 50%
ftp client on linux	vsftpd on linux 90%
web browser on linux	lighttpd on linux	90%
EDIT: I just realized this might not be the right section for this question. Not much I can do about that now. Maybe a moderator can move it to the correct section.

I'm sorry, maybe my post was not clear.

Samba IS the mode of data xfer over the network. I'm trying to understand why it's performing the way it is BEFORE I abandon it.
