Unhappy samba: cannot see linux server from win

Hi everyone!

I am trying to get samba to work on RH 6.2 and can't seem to do it.

Here what is working:

both samba daemons are running: smb and the other one (whatwasitnameagain?)
The network (1 Linux RH6.2, 1 Win2k, 1 Win98) works fine, ftp/telnet all working perfect and two win machines can see eachother in the network-neighbourhood (peer-to-peer).

and that's what is not working:

I can't see the linux server from the win machines, although I log in with the correct username.
In swat I see the shares I have created (under tab shares) , but not under tab status (they shold show there when they are active, should they?)

Question from a newbie to samba:
1. Is it right that I have to also register an user in samba, additional to in linux?

2. What when I log in win98 with an username different must that be the username I defined on Samba? Will I be prompted for username/password when accessing the share or will I not see it at all?

3. Are there any tests that I can do to see where the error is? (can I try to access a share on samba with the samba client on linux, instead with win98?)

4. how long does it take for changes to take effect? I know that Micro$oft Network stuff can be outright slow to update changes.

Any hints or tips are appreciated.

Linux is delighting! I only use windows for playing games (that is what it is for anyway) ;-)

Greets

yes... you need to have at least a root user account in samba, if not many other user, in order to use samba correctly.

Everybody stand Back! I have the solution! By the end of Wednesday in American Time.

I have worked with SuSE GmbH Vigrerously and knocking down the firewall like that just made a Security Hole!

Yes! Is right. I will post a big ol' Tutorial for you all by thursday. How do you get it? E-mail contiga@mpinet.net and say "Add me to the Tutorial" and tell me what distro you are using.

Peace for Now!
