Samba Authentication Methods
Somebody please help...
I've read so many things about this, all of which contradict each other, and none of them work. I have a Samba 3 server for filesharing, and I have a 2000 SP4 Active directory (In native mode) domain. The windows domain has all of the users. All I want to do is be able to login to the fileserver, from a windows box, without having enter a username/password. A.K.A I don't want to have to maintain 2 seperate accounts for each user. I can get Kerberos to talk between the AD and Linux, and winbind works, because I can see the users & groups by doing wbinfo -u / -g. But samba/linux won't recognize the users. Plz, if anyone has any references or walkthroughs of good documentation on how to set this up, I would greatly appreciate it. What I have previously done is configured samba, configured kerberos, and configured nsswitch.conf. Thank you in advance, Ed |
While you might have seen this before, I consider this the definitive guide for setting up samba with winbind: http://info.ccone.at/INFO/Samba/winbind.html

Here is a very good tutorial on getting Samba and AD playing together nicely. I used this to setup windows shares on my Debian Sarge servers:
