Samba and XP Backup

Currently working with SuSE 9.3. All other systems on the network are Windows. I have gotten Samba working properly where I can log on from any PC and see the shared folders on the Linux box.

I have just installed a 100gb drive to act as a backup location for all office pc documents and emails.

The problem comes up when I attempt to run XP's backup utility and save the .bkf file to the Linux shared directory. It tells me that the backup file name could not be used and to make sure the path is valid and that I have sufficient access.

I have tried mapping a network drive in XP for the share and telling it to log on as a different user with the username and password for the share entered in. Saved the username - not the password. Not a real big deal, but still doesn't allow the backup to run after I have logged on.

Permissions are set so that I can read and write to the share. It took me a while to figure out the correct Samba config for that and was stoked when I did. But this was the main reason for the effort and I am stumped once again.

I would appreciate any input on this. I have been looking into setting the Linux box as the domain controller, but haven't succeeded in making that work yet. Thanks!

If you can read and write to the drive from the machine, then backup should work. The only thing I can think of is you may be r-w as user "bob" or whatever, but the backup utility may be running as "administrator" from the local machine. You may want to log in as administrator and see if you can r/w.

just a thought.
