Samba and XMMS

I play music from my kids computer upstair via Samba and he is running XP Pro. All of the music is on a 200 gig sata drive and the network is wireless 802.11g. The problem is that when i load a song it pauses at random intervals and is quite annoying. Once the song runs one time it does not do it again. Is there a solution to this and are there some things i can check.

I don't have experience using wireless, really, but I've not had any trouble with xmms pulling my mp3's across a wired connection from a samba share here. Anyway, given the finickiness some people see in wireless, I'd troubleshoot things first using a wired connection, if at all possible. Otherwise, test the computers with less physical separation? Beyond this, stutters might be possible if your CPU is heavily taxed to decode the mp3 stream, or the server's CPU/disk is taxed to transmit the stream. Just guesses, but work towards whittling down the amount of gee-whiz. (All things being equal, do other mp3 player utilities have the stutter?)

Stream your mp3s with Edna instead.

I was able to set-up a skip-free streaming Edna mp3 server on a beater P133w/64MB RAM over 10Base-T wired. It uses http, which has less overhead than SMB.
