On possibility is that you need to use the smbpasswd program to create the same user and password on the linux box as you have on windows. Another is that the nmbd daemon isn't running.
There is a "Samba 3 By Example" book on the Samba.org website that you might want to download.
Your question is pretty open however. There are several ways the network could be setup. Also, windows XP Home and XP pro are different when it comes to networking. Domain support and single logon are not possible with XP Home.
Can you access the windows XP computer's share if you enter the IP address instead?
