Samba & smb.conf & general linux networking

I'm having real issues getting Samba fully functional. Networking in General too.

I'm using KDE and I've read a lot about samba and how to config the smb.conf file. I've tried lots of options. I think I may have a settings issue system wide. I really need some help learning how to set up networking for a small home wireless system.

I can "see" the other computers in my home attached to my workgroup, but I cannot browse any of them.

I have one other linux computer & two other windows systems. (windows 7 & windows XP.) I can see them but cannot browse them at all. Even the other linux system.

I've run te command line smbtree and testparm with no problems detected.

When I try to access the windows system it asks for username & password. may seem like an obvious question, but whose username/password is samba needing? My system, the other computer's username, or some other? I've tried both my own and the other computers username & password but it does not connect or mount.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi mshelby,

First off, welcome to LQ!

Now, on to your problem...

Can you explain your requirements a bit more?

Are you trying to share files from you Linux host to your Windows host?
Or are you trying to get at files on your Windows host from your Linux host?

Thanks,

Well, the password that samba is requesting is the username and password for the computer you are connecting to. YO might need to addend domain information for instance if you are in a Windows domain environment you could try "domainname\username" for the username. If you do not have a Windows domain and are operating in a workgroup you might try the computer name as the domain for an example "Win7Name\username" appending the domain name or computer name explicitly tells the authenticating computer (in this case the workstation you are trying to connect to) where to check to see if you have provided proper credentials.
