samba and shadow password files

I'm having a little trouble setting up my server to become a PDC using Samba 3.

Whenever I try to get a client to join the domain, I get the message back "Username not found" when trying to join using root. It appears that there is no problem in the clients finding the domain, just authenticating passwords.

I read in my Samba guide that shadow password files can cause authentication problems if the smbd service hasn't been compiled correctly. I think that this is the source of my problem as I'm using Mandrake 10. Would I be correct in assuming the above?
I don't know the correct way for recompiling the smbd service so that samba is happy using a shadow password file.

I got the samba stuff on here using RPM's off the distro disk rather than compiling from source so if it could be done using the rpm command it would be much easier.

Any help would be appreciated.

I never know about this.
Are you add your root(uid=0) user to samba user?
Are you add your machine to samba machine user?
