Samba and DAVE for mac
Ok, got my server up and running. and i downloaded DAVE for mac to connect to it so i could upload some MP3 files before wiping the mac HD and starting fresh. but i can't get dave to work, it keeps giving me an error when i try to connect to the server saying the netbios name is not recognized, but i can get connected to my windows machine..........but that is connected through the server:
iMac<------->Linux Box<------->Windows pc
so i can see through it, but i can't see the server itself, also, when i tried to transfer files to my windows machine from the mac, it locked up and killed everything, i had to reboot the server and reset my ipchains and ip_forward to get back online.....any suggestions???? HELP PLEASE!!!!!

If you are running os X then you can throw out DAVE. I found that that has really confused things. I can mount shares from windows and Linux machines through the command line in os X but have not had any luck in getting them to be viewable from the finder. so I mount the share I need and move it to a location on the mac then do what i need. Theoretically you can mount a samba share from the finder in the connect to server option of the Go menu. smb://server/share

this wont help you with 8.6 but i figurred out how to get a samba share to show up on the desktop.
in the terminal mkdir <mountpoint> i put it on my desktop
mount -t smbfs ://server/share <mountpoint>
it asks for a password after that the icon on the desktop changes from a folder to a network drive but you cant double click it.
force quit the finder and you have a graphically browseable mounted share
