I have installed Redhat Linux 7.1.
I have installed samba 2.0.7 also on my Linux machine.
I have an another NT machine which is not in any domain. I wish to make my linux box as a PDC and connect my NT machines. I have followed all the steps. I am not able to find the domain in my NT mnachine.
Firstly I edited the .conf file to suit to my network.
My samba is installed (by default) in etc/samba directory. There is no bin directory at all under etc/samba/bin as many tutorials are pointing this. Is the installation wrong.
Pls can u give me a step by step procedure ( right from .conf file to adding users and other stuff )of what has to be done.

Hint: use your NT machine as a PDC.
Create a machine account for your NT Machines.

The way I read the Samba docs is that a Samba server can not become a PDC. Check in version 2.2.0 to see if that has changed.

I have only ever seen the smb.conf files under /etc. The binaries can be under /usr/local or usr/local/bin (others?)

If you want a step by step mode, try the online manuals at samba.org.

Here's the sequence of events you need to complete.

Set up your samba shares as 'user' access.
Add unix users
Add samba users
Confirm that you can see the samba server.
Create the machine accounts for the NT Farm.

Yep. 2.2.0 is the way to go for a Samba-based PDC. Older versions won't do the trick.

this is my first tiem to linux i have another machine on windows98 i want to share the directories of both windows98 and linux on windows98 machine.i know this much that it requires samba to do teh job but how to do that...................? i dont know can anybody send me some helping material on how to configure it ? bot h machines ping each others ip too so i have done this much

First, install Samba if not already on your machine. Next, go to http://www.samba.org, pick your favorite country, pick Documentation, and look at the PDF or HTML version of the HOWTOs. That will help you configure Samba.
