samba


I need to install samba on my win xp machine as to be able to print on the mandrake machine. The 2 mandrake machines print fine, where is a samba version for win xp, I looked on the samba site.

You don't need to install samba on windows. Samba allows NIX boxes to connect to Windows systems via the SMB protocol, which is what Windows uses by default. All you should need to do is connect to the shared printer from Windows and load the drivers, just as you would if the printer were attached to another Windows box.

smb, the protocol managed by samba, is Windows native file and printsharing protocol. There is no such thing as samba for win xp. Samba for win xp *is* win xp.

Ok, that makes sense, I opened windows printer area to add the printer but it does not see the mandrake machine.

setting up printersharing with Samba can be tricky, you should read the official howto's (there are two of them, one for classical linux printing, one for CUPS printing). Check in your smb.conf that your printer has the _browseable_ parameter set on _yes_ ([printers] section).
