Sage Line 50 Reports & Samba

This probably is relevant only to those in the UK, but here goes.

I am running a Linux server using Samba to allow windows shares. All is working just great - except....

We use Sage Line 50 Financial Controller network version 10. Everything runs fine when entering data from any windows system, however running reports is like watching paint dry.

I've taken a look at the network activity on an XP workstation, and the network traffic appears to be at around 30% (100Mb). At first I thought that it may be the amount of data, so I copied the data files to one of the workstations, pointed a different workstation to use this data source, and the whole thing speeds up amazingly.

A given report on the XP - XP workstation peer-to-peer setup runs in around 2.5 minutes. The same thing to the Samba server takes around 46 minutes.

Anyone have any ideas as to why it's so slow using Samba? The server is considerably more powerful and has a much better SCSI drive subsystem. I've also tried it on an old NT server (much slower hardware) and it runs in around 2 mins.

Cheers,

Carl.

Hi Frustin,

Thanks for the reply, but I assume that you have the wrong link. This one's about dual monitors under X11. If there's an existing thread, would you mind trying again please?

Thanks,

Carl.

i did sorry about that.

Do you have the right one?

Cheers

Carl.

yeah.

Regarding your problem. are you certain that your nic is set to 100meg and full duplex?

carlmarshall 08-02-2004 06:34 AM

Frustin,

Yes it's running at 100M F/D. I can copy the Sage data folder structure containing 60Mb from the server to a workstation in around 7secs, and this shows a network usage on the workstation of up to around 20%.

It's strange that the Sage reports run at around 30-35% network load, yet take forever.

Carl.
